Locaboo becomes Ayunis: Launching Public-Sector AI
Jul 8, 2025
We’re happy to have backed Locaboo early, and we’re proud to see the team double down on their mission of making the public sector truly ready for the age of AI. With Ayunis, they are taking a major step toward practical, secure AI adoption in administrations: reducing workload where it actually happens - inside processes, documents, and decisions.
Munich, 8 July 2025: Overworked staff, outdated IT systems, and a growing catalogue of responsibilities are slowing down public administrations in Germany. While the digitalisation debate often focuses on citizen-facing apps and online forms, the real workload inside authorities is frequently overlooked: with an average of 1.3 million citizen requests per year, administrative staff must manually review, assess, and translate countless uploaded documents into decision-ready information - a time-consuming process that further intensifies an already strained personnel situation.
Ayunis addresses this challenge with its new products Core and Studio: a practical AI platform designed specifically for the needs of the public sector - transparent, secure, and ready to use.
Two tools — one goal: create capacity while keeping control
With Ayunis Core, case workers get an AI assistant with an intuitive chat interface that acts as a sovereign digital companion—independent of any single AI model. For the first time, the tool connects interfaces, systems, data, and processes that today often sit isolated next to one another. As an API platform, it also enables the development of custom agents and tools.
The open-source solution can be operated in a GDPR-compliant way—either in a data center, on-premise, or in the cloud—and works with any common AI model, from European providers such as Mistral to EU-operated ChatGPT instances. Data remains local or in ISO-certified European data centers.
Ayunis Studio goes one step further. It accelerates application processing by using AI to analyse uploaded documents and prepare the contained data. The final decision to adopt the data always remains with humans—efficiency gains without loss of control. The system digitises complex administrative workflows from application to decision—for example in childcare subsidies or social benefits.
Implementation takes little time and is personally supported by the Ayunis team—from onboarding and operations to ongoing support.
Ayunis Locaboo will remain as a standalone solution for municipal resource management, centrally managing bookings, communication, and billing in one system. The proven software can be individually adapted to each municipality’s processes and will continue to be developed in parallel with the new AI platform.
What makes Ayunis Core and Studio stand out
Built close to practice: Ayunis was developed in dialogue with Locaboo’s customer base of over 700 municipalities.
Automated, but controllable: Processes are accelerated, not replaced. Humans remain decision-makers.
Digital sovereignty by design: Open source (Ayunis Core), privacy by design, and OZG-compliant solutions at maturity level 3.
Ready to use now: Ayunis Core is available immediately as open source—free for self-hosting or as a supported cloud version.
From resource management to an AI platform
Ayunis began in 2021 as Locaboo, with software for the digital management of municipal resources such as community centers, sports facilities, and event venues. Today, more than 700 administrations work with the solution—meaning thousands of digitised processes, simplified workflows, and ultimately many thousands of hours less administrative effort. In practice, it quickly became clear that the need for real relief extends far beyond resource management.
“Our customers have shown us where the pain really is,” explains Andreas Michel, founder of Locaboo. “That’s why we rebuilt the Ayunis solutions: to help administrations cope with the growing flood of information.”
The vision: an administration that works — for everyone
The new federal government wants public administration to become digital, connected, and citizen-centric. Ayunis picks up this vision—and delivers a sovereign, ready-to-use AI platform as an urgent answer to a reality in which 70% of citizens consider the state overwhelmed.
“Real administrative modernisation doesn’t start with the citizen app, but with the processes, forms, and decision paths in the background—that’s exactly where we begin. Only with such a solid foundation will we realise true digital administration,” comments Andreas Michel, founder of Locaboo.
From 8 July 2025, Ayunis is available to all interested municipalities. More information at https://www.ayunis.com/.
